The Lack Of

Brunnera Large-leaved 'Sea Heart' – Elegance in the Shade

Brunnera macrophylla 'Sea Heart' is a valued ornamental perennial with extremely showy, heart-shaped leaves and subtle blue flowers. It is perfect for planting in the shade, bringing freshness and contrast to the garden thanks to its silvery-green leaves.

Plant characteristics

  • Height and habit:
It reaches 30–40 cm in height and similar width, forming compact, dense clumps.

  • List:

    • Large, heart-shaped, with a distinct silvery color with dark green veins.
    • The leaves are thick, slightly velvety to the touch and extremely resistant to damage and drought.
  • Flowers:

    • Small, light blue, reminiscent of forget-me-nots, they develop on thin stems in April and May.
    • The flowers appear in dense, loose umbels, adding a delicate charm to the plant.

Growing conditions and care

  • Position:
It grows best in semi-shaded to shady places. Ideal for growing under trees and shrubs, in shady beds and on the edges of forest gardens.

  • Soil:
It likes humus, moist, but well-drained soils, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.

  • Watering:
It requires regular watering, especially during periods of drought, but it tolerates short-term dryness well thanks to its fleshy leaves.

  • Frost resistance:
Fully frost hardy (zone 3–7). In colder regions, it is worth covering the base of the plant with a layer of mulch for additional protection.

Care

  • Trimming:
Removing faded inflorescences improves the appearance of the plant and prevents spontaneous seeding.
In autumn, you can trim the leaves if they are damaged by frost, although they often retain their beauty throughout the winter.

  • Fertilization:
In spring, it is worth feeding the plant with an organic or compound fertilizer for perennial plants.

Use in the garden

  • Shade beds:
Ideal for beds in shady areas, where its silvery leaves add bright accents.

  • Ground cover:
Thanks to its compact growth, it is perfect as a ground cover in shady areas of the garden.

  • Cut flowers:
Its delicate flowers can be used in floral arrangements.

  • Combinations with other plants:
It goes well with ferns, cranesbills, hostas and other shade-loving plants.
