The Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara) is a majestic conifer with an elegant habit and evergreen foliage, ideal for large gardens and parks. Its conical form and soft needles in shades of grey-green give any space a unique character.
Appearance of the Himalayan cedar
- Height: It grows up to 15–30 meters, and even more in favorable conditions.
- Cut: Young trees have a conical shape, with age they become more spreading.
- Needle: Soft, delicate, 2.5–5 cm long, blue-green to grey-green in colour.
- Cones: Cylindrical, 7–10 cm long, initially green, turning brown over time.
Requirements and Care of the Himalayan Cedar
- Position: It prefers sunny positions, grows well in warm, sheltered places.
- Soil: It requires deeply humus, well-drained soil, moderately moist.
- Watering: Young trees require regular watering during periods of drought. Older plants tolerate short-term droughts well.
- Frost resistance: Sensitive to severe frosts, especially at a young age. In colder regions, it is worth protecting young trees for the winter.
- Trimming: Unnecessary in the case of natural habit. If necessary, it is best to do it in early spring.
