Beetroot
Number of products : 15Beetroot is a popular root vegetable with intense red flesh, valued for its sweetish taste and richness of nutritional value. We offer seeds of proven varieties, ideal for cultivation in Polish climatic conditions.
Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is a biennial plant grown as an annual, belonging to the quinoa family. It is a source of many valuable nutrients, such as B vitamins, vitamin C, iron, magnesium and fiber. Regular consumption of beetroot supports the circulatory system, improves immunity and has a beneficial effect on digestive processes.
Cultivation requirements:
-
Position: Beets prefer sunny positions, but they also tolerate light shading. They are plants with moderate heat requirements, they tolerate frosts well, which allows for early sowing.
-
Soil: They grow best on fertile, humus soils, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (pH 6.0-7.0). Avoid waterlogged and heavy soils, which can lead to root deformation.
Sowing and care:
-
Sowing: Beet seeds are sown directly into the ground from mid-April to the end of June, in rows 30-40 cm apart, to a depth of 2-3 cm. After emergence, when the plants reach a height of 5-7 cm, we interrupt them, leaving them every 10-15 cm in a row.
-
Irrigation: Beets require regular watering, especially during periods of drought. However, excessive hydration should be avoided, which can promote the development of fungal diseases.
-
Fertilization: Before sowing, it is worth enriching the soil with compost or well-decomposed manure. During the growing season, mineral fertilizers can be used, paying attention to moderate doses of nitrogen to avoid excessive accumulation of nitrates in the roots.
Beet varieties recommended for cultivation:
-
Red Ball: A variety with spherical, intense red roots, perfect for direct consumption and storage.
-
Opole: A variety with cylindrical roots, characterized by a sweet taste and delicate flesh.
-
Rival: A universal variety with oblong roots, suitable for both fresh consumption and processing.
Harvesting and storage:
Beets are harvested depending on the sowing date, from July to October. Roots intended for storage should be dug up before the first frost comes. Store them in a cool, damp room, e.g. in a basement, at a temperature of 1-2°C, covered with sand or in boxes with damp peat.
