Hosta (Funkia) is a perennial ornamental plant native to East Asia, especially Japan and China. Prized for its showy foliage and delicate flowers, it has become a popular choice in gardens around the world.

Characteristics:

  • List: Large, heart-shaped or oval, with a variety of colors – from deep green, through bluish shades, to golden and cream. Many varieties have leaves with striking margins or stripes.

  • Flowers: Bell-shaped, white, lavender or purple in color, gathered in loose inflorescences on erect stems. Flowering occurs from June to August.

  • Cut: It forms compact clumps from 20 cm to even 1 m high, depending on the variety.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: Prefers semi-shaded to shady places; However, light-leafed varieties can tolerate more sun, provided the soil is sufficiently moist.

  • Soil: Fertile, humus, moist, slightly acidic (pH around 6.0). Avoid heavy and waterlogged soils.

  • Frost resistance: Fully frost resistant; tolerates Polish winters well.

Care:

  • Watering: Regular, especially during periods of drought; The soil should be constantly slightly moist.

  • Fertilization: In spring, it is worth using a compound fertilizer for ornamental plants to support lush leaf growth.

  • Trimming: Removing faded inflorescences and dead leaves improves the aesthetics of the plant and prevents the development of diseases.

Garden Use:

Hostas are irreplaceable in shady beds, forest gardens and as ground cover plants under trees and shrubs. Thanks to the variety of varieties, they blend in perfectly with other shade-loving perennials, such as ferns, brunners and cranesbills. They can also be grown in containers, decorating shady terraces and balconies.
