American millet (Campsis radicans) – Exotic Creeper with Spectacular Flowers
The American millet (Campsis radicans) is a striking climber native to North America, which impresses with bell-shaped, fiery flowers in shades of red, orange or yellow. Thanks to its fast growth and unusual decorativeness, it is a plant eagerly grown in gardens, especially where an impressive accent in the form of a climber is needed.
Main features of the American millin
Flowers
- Colour: Intense orange (depending on the variety, they can be more red, yellow or orange).
- Shape: Bell-shaped, gathered in clustered inflorescences at the ends of the shoots.
- Size: They reach a length of 6–8 cm.
- Flowering: From July to September, providing a long-lasting decorative effect.
List
- Colour: Green, pinnate composed of 7–11 serrated leaflets.
- Seasonality: The leaves fall off for the winter, and before that they may turn yellow.
Cut
- Form: A vigorously growing climber reaching a height of up to 8–10 m, climbing with adventitious roots or wrapping around supports.
- Growth Rate: The annual growth can be as high as 1–2 m, especially in warm and sunny positions.
Cultivation requirements of a million U.S.
Location and soil
- Position: It grows best in full sun, which is conducive to abundant flowering. It tolerates light partial shade, but the flowers will be less numerous.
- Soil: Fertile, well-drained, moderately moist. It likes neutral or slightly acidic soils. It does not tolerate waterlogged soils.
Watering and fertilizing
- Watering: Moderate – tolerates periodic droughts well, but young plants require regular irrigation.
- Fertilization: In spring, it is worth feeding the plant with a compound fertilizer that supports flowering.
Care
- Trimming: It requires annual pruning in early spring to encourage the growth of new shoots on which flowers form.
- Supports: It requires solid supports (e.g. pergolas, trellises, gazebos), as heavy shoots can weaken more delicate structures over time.
- Wintering: Fully frost resistant in warmer regions of Polish (zone 6–9). In colder places, young plants should be protected for the winter with a mound of bark or straw.
