Blueberry 'Eliot' – Late Fruiting Variety with Abundant Yield
Blueberry 'Eliot' (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Eliot') is a unique variety of highbush blueberry, ideal for those looking for a late-ripening blueberry. Thanks to the fruit harvested at the end of August and in September, it allows you to extend the season for fresh blueberries.
Characteristics of the 'Eliot' blueberry
Fruit: Medium-sized, light blue, with a more acidic taste compared to other varieties. Great for preserves, but also for direct consumption for people who prefer a more pronounced taste.
Yield: Abundant, with plenty of fruit on each shrub, making this strain attractive to growers and amateur gardeners alike.
Shrub: It grows to a height of 1.5–2 meters, with a spreading habit. It is resistant to most diseases, which makes it easy to grow.
Leaves: Green, elliptical, in autumn they turn warm colors, adding decorativeness to the garden.
Frost resistance: The variety is fully frost hardy, tolerates temperatures down to -25°C well.
Growing and Caring for Blueberries 'Eliot'
- Position: Sunny, so that the fruit ripens evenly and has the best taste.
- Soil: Acidic (pH 4.0–5.5), permeable, humus and moist. Mulching the soil helps to keep it acidic and moist.
- Watering: Regular, especially during periods of drought and during fruiting. It is important that the soil is constantly slightly moist.
- Fertilization: It is recommended to use fertilizers for acidophilic plants in spring and after fruiting.
- Pruning: It is done in early spring, removing old, weak and diseased shoots, which increases yield.
Application of blueberry 'Eliot'
- Preserves: The fruit is ideal for jams, juices, preserves and other preserves thanks to its more distinct, sour taste.
- Direct consumption: Recommended for lovers of intense, less sweet blueberries.
- Decorativeness: Thanks to the autumn discoloration of the leaves, the shrub also has an ornamental function in the garden.
Seasonal interest in blueberry 'Eliot'
- Spring: Development of leaves and flowers that herald abundant fruiting.
- Summer: The fruit ripens at the end of August, providing fresh blueberries until September.
- Autumn: The leaves turn red and orange, adding charm to the garden.
- Winter: Dormancy of the plant, full frost resistance.
Decoration of your garden
The 'Eliot' blueberry is not only a source of tasty and healthy fruit, but also a garden decoration thanks to the decorative appearance of the shrub, especially in autumn. Ideal for growers and gardeners who appreciate late varieties of blueberries.
