Broad beans (Vicia faba) are an annual plant in the Fabaceae family, prized for their large, bright green seeds with high nutritional value. It is a source of protein, fiber and B vitamins. Growing broad beans in the garden is relatively simple, and this plant additionally enriches the soil with nitrogen, thanks to symbiosis with nodule bacteria.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: Broad beans prefer sunny or slightly shaded positions. It is a plant resistant to cold, withstanding frosts as low as -4°C.

  • Soil: It grows best on fertile, moist soils with a pH of 6.5-7.0. On lighter soils, it requires regular irrigation.

Sowing and care:

  • Sowing: Broad bean seeds are sown directly into the ground from late February to mid-April. The recommended spacing is 60 cm between rows and 10-20 cm between plants in a row. The sowing depth is 4 cm on heavy soils and 6 cm on light soils.

  • Care: Regular weeding and loosening of the soil around the plants promotes their proper growth. During periods of drought, watering is necessary, especially during flowering and pod formation.

Broad bean varieties recommended for cultivation:

  • Witek Manita: A very early variety, recommended for cultivation under cover and in the ground.

  • Aquadulce: An early variety that can be grown under cover or in the ground.

  • Figaro: A variety with longer vegetation, for cultivation under cover and in open ground.

Set:

Broad beans are ready for harvest when the pods are well filled, but the seeds are still young and tender. Harvesting is carried out from late spring to late summer, depending on the sowing date and variety.
