Buddleia (Buddleja davidii) is a fast-growing deciduous shrub that reaches a height of 1.5 to 3 meters. Its characteristic, arched shoots are decorated with lanceolate, grey-green leaves. The greatest decoration of buddleias, however, are paniculate inflorescences, which appear from July to October. The flowers, gathered in dense clusters, emit an intense, honey-like scent, effectively attracting butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: Sunny and warm; In shady places, flowering is less abundant.

  • Soil: Permeable, moderately fertile, neutral or slightly alkaline.

  • Humidity: Moderate; Buddleia tolerates short-term droughts, but young plants require regular watering.

  • Frost resistance: In the Polish climate, young specimens can freeze, so it is recommended to cover the base of the shrub for the winter.

Care:

  • Trimming: In early spring (March-April), the shoots should be cut to a height of 20-30 cm above the ground, which stimulates the plant to intensive growth and abundant flowering.

  • Fertilization: During the growing season, it is worth feeding buddleia with compound fertilizers for flowering plants.

  • Removal of faded inflorescences: Regular removal of withered flowers prolongs the flowering period and improves the aesthetics of the shrub.

Garden Use:

Buddleia is perfect as a solitary plant on the lawn, in bedding compositions and in naturalistic plantings. Its long, colorful inflorescences are an attractive decorative element, and the ability to attract butterflies adds life and dynamism to the garden. Due to its rapid growth and impressive flowering, buddleia is eagerly planted near terraces, gazebos or resting places, where you can admire its charm up close.
