Hellebore (Helleborus) is a valued perennial that stands out for its ability to bloom in the coldest seasons of the year, often as early as December to March. Its flowers, reminiscent of roses, appear against a background of dark green, leathery leaves, creating a striking contrast.

Characteristics:

  • List: Evergreen, palmate, with a leathery structure, they remain decorative all year round.

  • Flowers: Single or full, depending on the variety, in white, pink, purple, green and even yellow. Flowering lasts from winter to early spring.

  • Cut: It forms compact clumps 30–50 cm high.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: Semi-shaded to shaded; Places under deciduous trees or shrubs are ideal.

  • Soil: Fertile, humus, moist, neutral or slightly alkaline.

  • Frost resistance: High; It tolerates low temperatures well, but young plants should be covered in harsh winters.

Care:

  • Watering: Regular, especially during periods of drought; The soil should be constantly slightly moist.

  • Fertilization: In spring, it is recommended to use compost or organic fertilizer.

  • Trimming: Removing old leaves in early spring promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Garden Use:

Hellebores are perfect for planting in shady beds, forest gardens and as ground cover plants under trees and shrubs. They go well with other shade-loving perennials, such as ferns, hostas or tawula. They can also be grown in containers, decorating terraces and balconies during the winter.
