Clandon Barbula 'White Surprise' – Elegant Perennial with a Contrasting Accent

Clandon barbula 'White Surprise' (Caryopteris × clandonensis 'White Surprise') is a unique variety of barbula, distinguished by two-colored, white-green leaves and small blue flowers. It is a semi-woody shrub with a compact habit that blooms profusely from late summer to autumn. Thanks to its leaves and long flowering period, this variety gives the beds a special charm, even after the end of flowering. Ideal for solitary plantings, perennial compositions and pots.

Main features of the Clandon barbula 'White Surprise'

Flowers

  • Colour: An intense blue that contrasts beautifully with the light leaves.

List

  • Colour: Green-white – a light green center surrounded by a wide, creamy-white margin.

  • Width: It grows about 60-80 cm, forming a dense clump.

Cultivation requirements of the Clandon barbula 'White Surprise'

Location and soil

  • Position: Full sun – the more light, the better the color of the leaves and abundant flowering.
  • Soil: Permeable, light, moderately dry to dry, neutral to slightly alkaline. Ideal for sandy or gravelly soils.

Watering and fertilizing

  • Watering: The plant tolerates drought well, but young cuttings should be watered regularly until they are fully rooted.
  • Fertilization: In spring, it is worth using a compound or organic fertilizer to support growth and flowering.

Care

  • Trimming: In early spring (March–April), prune the shoots to a height of 10–15 cm to encourage the growth of new, strong shoots and abundant flowering.
  • Wintering: The plant is fully frost hardy in zones 6–9. In colder regions, it is worth covering the base of the plant with mulch.
  • Reproduction: Can be propagated by semi-woody cuttings in summer.
