Common currant 'Rovalda' – a modern variety of red currant

Common currant 'Rovalda' (Ribes rubrum 'Rovalda') is a modern, valued variety of red currant originating from the Netherlands. It is known for its hardiness, long and dense clusters and high-quality fruits. Perfect for both home gardens and commercial plantations, offering tasty fruit with versatile use.

Characteristics of the 'Rovalda' variety

  • Height and habit:

    • It forms a medium-sized shrub 1.2–1.5 meters high and about 1.2 meters wide. The plant is well branched and has a compact, slightly erect habit.
  • Leaves:

    • Lobed, light green, typical for currants, maintaining a healthy appearance throughout the season.
  • Flowers:

    • Yellow-green, small flowers appear in May. They are resistant to spring frosts.
  • Fruits:

    • Large, light or dark red berries gathered in long, even clusters.
    • The fruits are juicy, aromatic, with a mildly sour taste.
    • They ripen evenly from mid-July.

Growing conditions

  • Position:

    • It grows best in full sun, which is conducive to the intense color and taste of the fruit. It can also be grown in partial shade, although the yield may be slightly lower.
  • Soil:

    • It requires fertile, well-drained, moderately moist soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (pH 5.5–6.5).
  • Watering:

    • Regular watering during periods of drought is especially important during flowering and ripening of fruit.
  • Frost resistance:

    • Fully frost-resistant (zone 5–8), it does well in Polish climatic conditions.

Care

  • Pruning:

    • In early spring, old, dead and diseased shoots should be removed, leaving 6–8 healthy, young branches.
    • Regular overexposure of the bush ensures better fruit ripening and plant health.
  • Fertilization:

    • In spring, it is worth using a compound or organic fertilizer, such as compost, which supports abundant fruiting and healthy growth.
  • Mulching:

    • Mulching the soil around the shrub reduces weed growth and helps retain moisture.

Use in the Garden

  1. Fruit cultivation:
    • An excellent variety for home gardens, thanks to its high-quality fruits.
  2. Commercial plantations:
    • Thanks to its hardiness and even ripening, it is popular with growers.
  3. Fruit hedges:
    • It can be used as a utility plant in the form of hedges.
