Sawtooth hydrangea 'Morning Glory' (Hydrangea serrata) – the subtle beauty of flowers

The sawtooth hydrangea 'Morning Glory' is an extremely decorative shrub with delicate, lacy flowers and elegant, serrated leaves. This variety is particularly valued for its subtle colors and versatility of use in gardens of various characters. It is perfect for both small spaces and larger garden arrangements.

Characteristics

  • Habit and Size:
A compact, dense shrub with a slightly rounded habit. It reaches a height and width of 80 cm to 1.2 m, which makes it ideal for smaller gardens and beds.

  • Flowers:
Flat inflorescences, composed of small fertile flowers in the center and larger sterile flowers at the edges. The colour of the flowers varies depending on the pH of the soil: from blue on acidic soils to pink on alkaline soils. It blooms from June to September.

  • List:
Green, serrated, in autumn they turn purple, which adds to the plant's attractiveness in autumn.

Growing conditions

  • Position:
It grows best in partial shade, but can also tolerate sunny positions, provided that the soil is sufficiently moistened.

  • Soil:
Fertile, humus, well-drained and moderately moist soils. The pH of the soil affects the color of flowers:

    • Sour: Blue flowers.
    • Inert or alkaline: Pink flowers.
  • Watering:
Regular, especially during periods of drought. The soil should be constantly moist, but not waterlogged.

  • Frost resistance:
Frost-resistant (zone 5–7), but in harsh winters it is worth covering young shrubs with agrotextile.

Care

  • Trimming:
In early spring, dead and damaged shoots are removed. Old inflorescences can be pruned after winter. Hydrangea serrated blooms on last year's shoots, so avoid strong pruning, which can limit flowering.

  • Fertilization:
During the growing season, it is worth using fertilizers dedicated to hydrangeas, especially those affecting the intensity of the flower color.

  • Mulching:
A layer of bark or compost mulch helps to keep the soil moist and protects the roots from temperature fluctuations.

Use in the Garden

  1. Discounts and Borders:
Perfect for flower beds and as a low border.

  2. Naturalistic Gardens:
It goes well with perennials and other shrubs in free-form gardens.

  3. Groups of shrubs:
Ideal for combinations with other hydrangeas, rhododendrons or azaleas.

  4. Containers and Pots:
It can be grown in larger containers on terraces and balconies.

  5. Shadowy corners:
It works well in semi-shaded places, where its flowers and leaves create a striking contrast.
