Knotweed – Decorative Plant with Subtle Elegance
Knotweed (Bistorta officinalis, syn. Polygonum bistorta) is a perennial herbaceous plant that combines ornamental qualities with functional properties. Its slender, pink inflorescences and decorative leaves make it an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens, perennial beds or herb gardens. Knotweed is also known as a medicinal and melliferous plant, which adds to its appeal.
Main features of snake knotweed
Flowers
- Colour: Pale pink or light pink flowers gathered in dense, cylindrical inflorescences.
- Shape: Slender, cylindrical panicles 5–10 cm long.

Cultivation requirements of knotweed
Location and soil
- Position: It grows best in semi-shaded places, but it also tolerates full sun, provided that the soil is sufficiently moistened.
- Soil: It prefers fertile, humus, constantly moist soils, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It is ideal for damp positions, such as the edges of ponds or streams.
Watering and fertilizing
- Watering: Regular, especially during drought, because the plant likes a constantly moist substrate.
- Fertilization: In spring, it is advisable to apply organic fertilizers or compost to support growth and abundant flowering.
Care
- Trimming: After flowering, you can trim the inflorescences, which stimulates the plant to produce new leaves.
- Propagation: It easily propagates by division of rhizomes in early spring or autumn.
- Wintering: It is fully frost hardy (zone 3–8) and does not require additional protection for the winter.
Application of Snake Knotweed

- Perennial beds: It blends beautifully with other perennials, such as delphiniums, foxgloves, coneflowers and rudbeckias.
- Naturalistic plantings: An excellent choice for prairie, country or forest style gardens.
