Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an annual plant from the Asteraceae family, cultivated for its edible leaves of various shapes and colors. It is rich in vitamins A, C, K, folic acid and fiber, supporting digestion and providing valuable nutrients.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: Lettuce prefers sunny or slightly shaded positions. The optimal growth temperature is 10-20°C.

  • Soil: It grows best on fertile, humus-rich soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (pH 6.0-7.0). The soil should be moist, but not waterlogged.

Sowing and care:

  • Sowing: Lettuce seeds are sown directly into the ground from early spring to late summer, every 2-3 weeks, to ensure the continuity of the harvest. Row spacing 20-30 cm, and every 20-25 cm in a row. You can also grow lettuce from seedlings by sowing seeds under cover in February-March.

  • Irrigation: Lettuce requires regular watering, especially during the period of germination and intensive growth. Avoid overdrying the soil, which can lead to bitter leaves.

  • Fertilization: Before sowing, it is worth enriching the soil with compost. During the growing season, organic or mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content can be used to avoid excessive leaf growth at the expense of quality.
