Saskatoon

Saskatoon (Amelanchier) is a perennial shrub or small tree, valued both for its ornamental value and tasty fruit. Native to North America, it is gaining popularity in European gardens thanks to its versatility and low cultivation requirements.

Characteristics:

• Cut: A shrub or small tree that reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters, with a dense, spreading crown.

• List: Elliptical, green, in autumn they turn intense shades of yellow, orange and red, adding charm to any garden.

• Flowers: White, gathered in clusters, they appear in spring (April-May), attracting bees and other pollinating insects.

• Fruit: Small, spherical, dark purple or navy blue berries with a slight waxy coating, ripening in June and July. They are sweet, juicy and rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

Cultivation requirements:

• Position: It prefers sunny or semi-shaded places; in full sun, it bears fruit more abundantly.

• Soil: It grows best on fertile, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. However, it tolerates different types of soil, provided that adequate drainage is provided.

• Humidity: Requires moderate humidity; Young plants need regular watering, while older ones are more resistant to short-term droughts.

Care:

• Planting: It is best to plant in spring or autumn, with a distance of 2–3 meters between plants.

• Watering: Regular in the first years after planting; then watering during periods of drought.

• Fertilization: It is worth feeding the plant with compost or compound fertilizer in the spring to support growth and fruiting.

• Cut: It is not necessary, but you can remove dead or too thickened branches in early spring to improve the airiness and health of the shrub.

Garden Use:

• Fruit: Ideal for raw consumption and preserves – jams, juices, desserts and wines. Thanks to the high content of antioxidants, the fruit has health-promoting properties.

• Garden decoration: Decorative flowers in spring and colorful foliage in autumn make the serviceberry attractive all year round.

• Hedges: Thanks to its dense habit, it is suitable for natural hedges and screens, providing privacy and aesthetics.

• Soil erosion: Thanks to its extensive root system, it will work well in areas prone to erosion, stabilizing the soil.
