Sage (Salvia) is a genus of plants that includes many species, both annual and perennial, prized for their decorative flowers and aromatic leaves. In gardening, varieties with intense purple flowers, such as downy sage 'Violet Queen' or sage 'Purple Rain', are particularly popular.

Characteristics:

  • Flowers: Intense purple, gathered in long, spike-shaped inflorescences, attracting pollinating insects. Flowering lasts from June to September, providing a long period of decorativeness.

  • List: Green, oval, slightly hairy, emitting a characteristic smell when rubbed.

  • Height: The plants reach a height of 25 cm (e.g. glossy sage) to 60 cm (e.g. sage 'Purple Rain'), depending on the variety.

Cultivation requirements:

  • Position: It grows best in full sun, where it blooms most profusely. It tolerates light partial shade, although flowering can be less intense.

  • Soil: It prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soils, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Drought resistant, but requires watering during periods of prolonged drought.

Care:

  • Trimming: Regular removal of faded inflorescences prolongs flowering. Spring pruning stimulates growth and improves the habit of the plant.

Garden Use:

  • Perennial gardens: Ideal in compositions with plants with contrasting colors.

  • Discounts: It is perfect for flower beds as a colorful accent.

  • Fringing: Suitable for creating border borders for flower beds or paths.

  • Naturalistic gardens: It fits great in natural and rustic style gardens.
