Short-haired reed grass – elegant ornamental grass
Short-haired reed grass (Calamagrostis brachytricha), also known as Chinese reed warbler, is an extremely attractive ornamental grass with a delicate habit and decorative inflorescences. Thanks to its subtlety, lightness and versatility, it is perfect for both naturalistic gardens and more formal arrangements. Its fluffy, silvery-pink inflorescences illuminate the garden space and give it elegance.
Main characteristics of the short-haired reed warbler
List
- Colour: Intensely green in spring and summer, in autumn they turn golden yellow.
- Shape: Narrow, arched, overhanging, forming dense clumps.
- Seasonality: They maintain decorativeness throughout the season, until winter.
Inflorescences
- Colour: Initially, they are silvery-pink, later they take on beige shades.
- Shape: Fluffy, fluffy panicles hovering high above the leaves.

- Form: A dense, semicircular clump with erect flower stems.
- Height: It reaches about 60–90 cm with leaves, and even 100–120 cm with inflorescences.
Cultivation requirements of the short-haired reed warbler
Location and soil
- Position: It prefers sunny or semi-shaded places. It blooms more profusely in sunny positions.
- Soil: Fertile, well-drained, moderately moist. It also tolerates weaker soils, but grows best in nutrient-rich soil.
Watering and fertilizing
- Watering: It requires regular watering during drought, especially in the first years after planting.
- Fertilization: In spring, it is worth using a compound or organic fertilizer to ensure lush growth and abundant flowering.
Care
- Trimming: In early spring (March/April), cut last year's leaves and flower shoots to a height of 10–15 cm above the ground.
- Wintering: The short-haired reed warbler is fully frost-hardy (zone 5–9) and does not require additional protection for the winter.
Application of the short-haired reed warbler
Beds and group plantings
- Perennial beds: It goes well with flowering plants such as rudbeckias, coneflowers, asters or sages.
- Group plantings: In larger groups, it creates effective, fluffy spots that enliven the space.
Solitary
- It is perfect as a central accent in the garden, especially when surrounded by low perennials.
Edging and planting near water
- Ideal for planting the edges of ponds, where its light habit adds natural charm to the space.
Winter decoration
- Dried inflorescences and leaves persist in winter, giving the garden structure and an interesting look.
