Brunnera 'Variegata' – Classic Elegance in the Shade Garden

Brunnera macrophylla 'Variegata' is a unique variety of perennial that catches the eye with its large, heart-shaped leaves decorated with a light, cream-colored edging. Its subtle, blue flowers and original leaves make it an excellent choice for shade gardens, where it adds delicacy and contrast.

Characteristics of Brunnery 'Variegata'

  • Height and habit:

    • It reaches 30–40 cm in height, growing to about 40–50 cm in width. It forms compact, spreading clumps.
  • Leaves:

    • Large, heart-shaped, green with creamy-white edges.
    • Decorative throughout the season, light edging wonderfully illuminates shady areas.
  • Flowers:

    • Small, light blue, reminiscent of forget-me-nots.
    • They appear from April to May in the form of loose umbels, rising above the leaves.

Growing conditions

  • Position: Grows best in partial shade or shade. Ideal for planting under trees and in shady beds.
  • Soil: Humus, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral.
  • Watering: It likes moist soil, but tolerates short-term dryness.
  • Frost hardiness: Fully frost hardy (zone 3–7). For protection in colder regions, it is worth using a layer of mulch.

Care

  • Pruning:

    • Regular removal of faded inflorescences improves the appearance of the plant.
    • In autumn, you can remove the leaves if they are damaged by frost, although they usually remain decorative until late autumn.
  • Fertilization:

    • In spring, it is worth feeding with an organic or compound fertilizer to support the development and coloration of the leaves.

Use in the Garden

  1. Shade beds: A great accent in shady areas thanks to the light leaf edging.
  2. Ground cover: The compactness and decorativeness of the leaves make it ideal for planting larger areas.
  3. Plant combinations: Works well with ferns, hostas, cranesbills and other shade-loving plants.
  4. Naturalistic gardens: Its subtle appearance is suitable for more casual arrangements.

Advantages of Brunnery 'Variegata'
