Lindheimer's Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies' – blooming lightness in the garden
Lindheimer's gaura 'Whirling Butterflies' is a beautiful perennial with subtle flowers resembling butterfly wings that float on thin, delicate stems. Its white flowers bring freshness and elegance to any garden, and its long flowering period makes it one of the most desirable plants in garden arrangements.
Plant characteristics
- Height and habit: The plant grows up to 60–90 cm in height and forms loose, airy clumps. Thin, flexible shoots move with the slightest gust of wind, which adds dynamism to the space.
- Flowers: Snow-white, four-petaled flowers with a delicate pink shade when developed. Flowers appear at the ends of the stems, creating the effect of floating butterflies. It blooms profusely from June until the first frost.
- List: Narrow, lanceolate, with a delicate red shade on young shoots, which is an additional decorative element.
Cultivation and care
- Position: It grows best in full sun, but tolerates light partial shade. In sunny places, it blooms more intensively.
- Soil: It likes light, well-drained, sandy loam soil with moderate moisture. It does not tolerate heavy and waterlogged soils.
- Watering: It requires regular watering during rooting and later becomes drought tolerant.
- Frost resistance: Suitable for hardiness zones 5–9. In colder regions, it is recommended to cover for the winter.
- Care:
- Removing faded inflorescences stimulates the plant to continue flowering.
- In early spring, prune the clumps close to the ground to stimulate new shoots to grow.
