Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is an annual plant from the cucurbit family, valued for its crunchy and juicy fruit. It is a source of vitamins K, C and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Regular consumption of cucumbers supports hydration of the body and has a beneficial effect on the digestive system.
Cultivation requirements:
-
Position: Cucumber prefers sunny, warm and wind-sheltered positions. The optimal growth temperature is 22-28°C.
-
Soil: It grows best on fertile, humus soils, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (pH 6.0-7.0). The soil should be well-drained and moist, but not waterlogged.
Sowing and care:
-
Sowing: Cucumber seeds are sown directly into the ground in the second half of May, when the risk of frost has passed, in rows every 80-100 cm, to a depth of 2-3 cm. You can also prepare seedlings in April and plant them in the ground in May.
-
Irrigation: Cucumber requires regular and abundant watering, especially during the flowering and fruiting period. Sprinkling the leaves should be avoided to prevent the development of fungal diseases.
-
Fertilization: Before sowing, it is worth enriching the soil with compost or well-decomposed manure. During vegetation, mineral fertilizers with a predominance of phosphorus and potassium can be used, avoiding excess nitrogen, which promotes lush leaf growth at the expense of yield.
