Common currant 'Jonkheer van Tets' – Classic Red Currant

Common currant 'Jonkheer van Tets' (Ribes rubrum 'Jonkheer van Tets') is one of the most famous and valued varieties of red currant. It is extremely popular with gardeners due to its early ripening, high fertility and excellent taste of the fruit. It is an excellent choice for both home gardens and commercial plantations.


Characteristics of the 'Jonkheer van Tets' variety

  • Height and habit:

    • It grows to a height of 1.2–1.5 meters. It forms a spreading, well-branched shrub.
  • Leaves:

    • Classic for currants – lobed, light green, lasting until late autumn.
  • Flowers:

    • Small, yellow-green flowers appear in May and are resistant to spring frosts.
  • Fruits:

    • Large, bright red berries with an intense, slightly sour taste.

Care

      • In early spring, dead, diseased and too old shoots (older than 3–4 years) are removed.
      • Overexposure of the bush allows for better ripening of the fruit.
    • It is recommended to leave 6–8 main shoots on the bush.
  • Fertilization:

    • In spring, it is worth using a compound or organic fertilizer, such as compost.
    • During the fruit set period, potassium fertilizers can be used to support the color and taste of the fruit.
  • Mulching:

    • Bark or sawdust mulch reduces weed growth, retains moisture and protects the roots.
