Shieldwort – A Unique Plant with Impressive Leaves

Darmera peltata, also known as California shieldwort, is a striking ornamental perennial prized for its large, umbrella-shaped leaves and decorative pink flowers. It is an ideal plant for planting on the banks of water reservoirs, in shady corners of the garden or in damp beds, where it introduces structure and natural grace.

  • Fertilization: In spring, it is advisable to use an organic fertilizer, such as compost, to ensure that you get the right nutrients.

  • Reproduction: By dividing the rhizomes in early spring or autumn.
  • Wintering: The plant is fully frost hardy (zone 5–9) and does not require special protection for the winter.
